Hair loss occurs because of different reasons and the types of hair loss too are many. People usually mistake all kinds of hair loss to be as baldness. This should not be done as there are several kinds of hair loss conditions present and one of them is baldness. Correct diagnosis is required for appropriate treatment of the condition. The most common kind of hair loss condition that is mostly observed in men is androgenetic alopecia. This is also known as pattern baldness as the hair loss occurs in a definite pattern. Hair starts thinning down and hair loss occurs but the growth of hair normally observed is not present or reduces by a great extent. This pattern continues over a number of growth cycles and baldness occurs in spots or circular areas. The main reason behind androgenetic alopecia is a history of androgenetic alopecia in the family. It is mostly a hereditary condition and based on the hereditary, the extent and timing of the baldness is determined. Sometimes due to inflammation caused by certain skin conditions, hair follicles can be damaged and as such, new hair growth is prevented. It is a permanent kind of hair damage and can be observed in people suffering from conditions such as lichen planus. The condition which leads to all these effects is known as scarring alopecia. Alopecia areata results in hair loss from certain sections of the body. It is classified into-alopecia areata, alopecia totalis and alopecia universalis. Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disease and is mostly genetic. Alopecia totalis and alopecia universalis result in complete hair loss and are very rare conditions. A change in the normal hair cycle results in a condition known as telogen effluvium. The change may be due to several reasons such as emotional or physical reasons. A certain activity or shock may trigger this condition and causes hair roots to go into a resting state pre-maturely. This is a temporary state and hair does grow back when this stage passes. A lot of hairstyling and usage of hair sprays and gels leads to a condition called as traction alopecia. Tying hair in severe knots or braiding it tightly can also lead to this condition. Once, the hair is left loose and the number of chemicals and devices used on the hair are lessened, then hair goes back to its previous cycle and hair loss stops. Poor nutrition is also one of the reasons for hair loss. Having an imbalanced diet and not having enough proteins and vitamins in your diet can lead to hair loss. Certain people also suffer from trichotillomania which is a mental illness that causes people to pull out their hair, leading to spots on the head or from parts of their body. These are a few of the specific conditions that result in hair loss. Treatment is readily available for all the conditions and even prescription drugs such as Propecia are being prescribed by doctors to help in the treatment.
