| Tramadol is a synthetic (man-made) pain reliever. It is a prescription pain medication and is said to work like morphine. It is used for treating moderate to moderately severe pain. This drug is used for various diseases including the treatment of RLS (restless leg syndrome), heartburn and fibromyalgia. Tramadol binds the receptors in the brain that are important for transmitting the sensation of the pain from throughout the body resulting in relief from the pain. Tramadol comes in many forms like capsules (regular and extended release), tablets (regular, extended release, chewable, low-residue etc), powders for compounding, preservation-free solutions for injection by various spinal routes (epidural, intrathecal, caudal and others) and many more forms. Comparative studies have demonstrated that Tramadol is more effective than NSAIDs (Non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) for controlling post operative pain and is one of the most effective pain reliever widely used to treat severe pain caused post several treatment procedures like cancer and joint pains. It is known to be a cheap prescription drug and is prescribed by many physicians to patients with chronic headaches. Multi-agent topical gels, creams, and solutions for nerve pain, rectal foam, concentrated retention enema, and a skin plaster quite similar to those used with Lidocaine have Tramadol experimentally used as an ingredient. If you have a prescription, Tramadol is easily available; however it is important to consult your doctor on the dosage and the duration of the medication before you start taking it, otherwise, it can lead to severe side effects. This medication may cause a possibility of introducing an antidepressant effect in some patients, predominantly those with chronic pain. The use of Tramadol should be avoided by women who are pregnant and nursing, as its safety during pregnancy and for nursing mothers has not been established yet. Tramadol could be particularly useful for aged people suffering from osteoarthritis. This is because, unlike non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, it does not worsen high blood pressure and cardiovascular complications. It also, does not have the probability to cause peptic ulcer disease. It was stated in the Cochrane Review that when Tramadol upon being taken for up to 3 months, could cause a decrease in pain, improvement in function and stiffness and an overall well-being. However, Tramadol can also cause side effects that are noteworthy enough to necessitate the patient to stop taking the medication. It is said that none of the drugs come without side effects; however, it’s also true that the degree of side-effects differs for each individual and every medicine. Every drug has some side effects and it is important to weigh the pros and cons and discuss them with your doctor or physician before you start taking the pain and inflammation medicine.
