The most common form of hair loss in men is male pattern baldness. It starts to form on the sides, near the front, and proceeds over the top of the head toward the back. It can be caused by genetic makeup, or by the fact that you produce a higher than normal amount of testosterone. The increased levels of testosterone that cause these changes are also responsible, in part, for pattern baldness in men and the general thinning of hair in women.
Other types of baldness and other causes for hair loss are: vitamin deficiencies (especially vitamin B) or use of some prescription drugs can cause hair loss. Chemotherapy, thyroid disease, poor circulation and even stress also may temporarily decrease the active production of hair.
If the over the counter treatments, such as Progaine (a shampoo) from the makers of Rogaine, or Rogaine, are not getting results, you may want to get prescription propecia for hair loss. Propecia works by blocking the body’s conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone, the active form of testosterone. It has been shown that taken daily, some hair will grow back. The amount varies quite a bit from person to person.
