Herpes
There are a number of types of herpes. One is the common cold sore, which usually occurs before another, more aggressive virus, such as a cold, is going to take hold in the body. A cold sore is classified as herpes simplex virus 1. A more serious kind of herpes is genital, sexually transmitted herpes, called herpes simplex virus 2. There is also herpes zoster, which used to be called shingles. Finally, Epstein-Barr virus is the form of herpes that causes mononucleosis.
Viral STDs can’t be cured, but the new protease inhibitors and antivirals can manage the symptoms much better than before. Taking prescription medicines like Zovirax (acyclovir) can decrease the recurrence of outbreaks up to 90 percent.
Valacyclovir is an antiviral agent used in the treatment of shingles (herpes zoster) or genital herpes.
Zovirax Cream is indicated for the treatment of Herpes Simplex virus infections of the skin including initial and recurrent genital herpes and herpes labialis.
